Abstract

This descriptive study was done to compare operating room nursing knowledge of the nursing students according to their operating room nursing experience.
The subjects were 54 senior nursing students of a Junior College of Nursing. Data was collected, using the self-reported questionnair comprised of 25 items, from July 1st to July 15th, 1986.
T-test was utilized for the analysis of the differences between the group who had operating room nursing experiences and the other group who had not.
The results of the study were as follows:
1) The students with operating room nursing experience showed higher level of knowledge than those with no experience in the area of skin suture (p <.005), types of silk necessary for gall bladder suture (p < .005), gauze counting in case of excessive bleeding after skin graft (p < .05).
2) There were significant differences in the level of knowledge between the experienced group and non-experienced group in the areas of disinfection (p < .05), the usage of instruments (p < .05), suture silk (p < .005).
3) There were no significant differences in general knowledge about operating room nursing between the experienced group and non-experienced group.
4) In sum, the students with operating room experience showed higher level of operating room nursing knowledge than those with no experience (p <.001).
